2011 PRQHBA Sale and Futurity
The Powder River Quarter Horse Breeders Invitational sale was held on Sunday, September 4th, 2011 with a large offering of quality horses. The PRQHBA sale is one of the longest running association sales in the country and the futurity competition showed evidence of the top quality that these breeders are putting into their horses. 96 head of top quality registered horses were catalogued and went under the gavel of Lynn Weishaar with the assistance of announcer John Johnson.
Heidi Petermann of Wibaux, MT sold the high selling horse of the sale at $7,700. The 2001 model grey gelding, King Kasey Cash bred and raised by Heidi, went to David Queckboerner of Chadwick, Illinois. Several of the high selling consignments went out of state with the high selling yearling consigned by Vicky Crofutt and the high selling weanling consigned by Church Steeple Quarter Horses both going to new homes in Colorado.
Always the highlight are the weanlings offered at this sale who are eligible to come back and compete for $10,000 in futurity prize money. The top selling weanling this year was from Church Steeple Quarter Horses – a red dun stud colt sired by West Texas Holiday. Roban and Marten Bunting purchased this colt for $2,900.
The PRQHBA Futurity was filled with strong competition this year. Starting the weekend off was the Two/Three Year Old Futurity combining a halter class, rail class, reining, and cattle work competition. There were nine competitors. Winning this competition was exhibitor Tori Beley riding a three-year old gelding she purchased from Nancy Hirsch as a weanling.
The next event on Saturday was the mature versatility competition. This event combines points from halter, western pleasure, reining, trail, cow work, heading, heeling, barrels, and poles. For the first time in PRQHBA history, there was a tie for first place between Heidi Petermann and Curran Schaffer. Since Curran had more first placings, the saddle went to him. Curran rode a horse sired by West Texas Holiday that he purchased from the PRQHBA sale and Heidi rode the grey horse she had consigned to the sale. There were 13 participants in the event which made for some lively and tough competition.
Winning the yearling gelding futurity was Marci Davis showing a chestnut yearling purchased from Bar M Quarter Horses. Marci took home a futurity check for $1,500. Kylee Sept from Miles City won the youth gelding futurity showing a gelding sired by West Texas Holiday.
Nicole McLure won the yearling futurity filly and youth filly competition showing a yearling filly sired by Brakes Off and purchased from Rick and Carmen Turnbough. She also took home a check for $1,500. These yearling futurities pay out $5,000 each through six places.
Also offered this year was a showmanship award. First place in showmanship was Nicole McClure and second went to Kyra King. Garrett Cunningham won a special award sponsored by Bar M Quarter Horses.
A special thank you is extended to 3D Energy, Joe and Lori Fortner, Bar M Quarter Horses and Lynn and Connie Weishaar for sponsoring money and prizes for the youth yearling futurities and the showmanship awards.
