2009 PRQHBA Sale and Futurity
The Powder River Quarter Horse Breeders Invitational sale was held on Sunday, September 6th, 2009 with a large offering of quality horses. The PRQHBA sale is one of the longest running association sales in the country and the futurity competition showed evidence of the top quality that these breeders are putting into their horses. 136 head of top quality registered horses went under the gavel of Lynn Weishaar with the assistance of announcer John Johnson.
Fifty five weanlings averaged $689 which was down approximately $200 from last years’ average of $881. Overall, the geldings averaged $2,929 which was up from last years average of $2432. Broodmares averaged $693 which was also down from last years’ average of $810. Eight yearling geldings averaged $1,093 and seven yearling fillies averaged $385.
Rod and Corrine Schaffer of Broadus, MT sold the high selling horse of the sale at $7,900. The 2000 model chestnut gelding went to Harry Allen. Mr. Allen also took home a very nice grey gelding sold by Joe Brown for $5,900. Geldings from the PRQHBA sale went as far as Virginia this year. Other states represented were Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma and South Dakota. The volume buyer was from Canada.
Always the highlight are the weanlings offered at this sale who are eligible to come back and compete for $10,000 in futurity prize money. The top selling weanling this year was from Three Mile Quarter Horses – a palomino stud colt sired by Night Time Shiner, a son of Shining Spark. Rebecca Compher purchased this colt for $3,000.
The PRQHBA Futurity was filled with strong competition this year. Starting the weekend off was the Two/Three Year Old Futurity combining a halter class, rail class, and reining competition. There were 10 competitors. Winning this competition was exhibitor Shannon Tarter riding a two-year old mare she had consigned to the PRQHBA sale. Shannon placed 5th in conformation, 1st in Western Pleasure, and 3rd in Reining. Second place went to Julie Korkow riding Dun A Lil Whiskey who was owned by Kevin Sept. Julie won the conformation class, placed second in the Western Pleasure and 7th in the reining. The three year old mare, Dun A Lil Whiskey, was sired by Surefine Whiskey and was purchased from Bar JT Quarter Horses.
The next event on Saturday was the mature versatility competition. This event combines points from halter, western pleasure, reining, trail, cow work, heading, heeling, barrels, and poles. Winning the event and a trophy saddle was Dave Tescher riding Smokin Jet 901 who was purchased from a PRQHBA sale from Karen Schiffer. There were 16 total participants and the competition was tough.
Winning the yearling gelding futurity was Wally Cash showing a sorrel yearling purchased from Bar M Quarter Horses. Mr. Cash took home a futurity check for $1,500.
Nicole McLure won the yearling futurity filly showing This Signature Is Gold, a nice filly by Frosty Boy King who is a Turnbough stallion. She also took home a check for $1,500. These yearling futurities pay out $5,000 each through six places.
Also offered this year was a showmanship award. Jeanie Hovermale and six year old Kylee Sept won the awards sponsored by Lynn and Connie Weishaar. Both received a gorgeous belt buckle.
An added feature this year was the donation of a fat steer. Zane Williams purchased the steer and then brought it in for auction. So, leading off the horse sale was a steer. The money raised from the sale of the steer was donated to the Rebecca Notti Scholarship Fund.
The PRQHBA also implemented a youth scholarship this year. Jeanie Hovermale who graduated from Powder River County District High School in 2009 was the recipient of this scholarship. Jeanie plans to attend Miles Community College and is enrolled in the Equine program there. Miss Hovermale has been involved with the PRQHBA sale and futurities since she was very young and she plans a career in the equine field. Honorable mentions for the scholarship went to Kaycee Craft from Miles City, MT and also Wyatt Adler of Rosebud.
