2007 PRQHBA Sale and Futurity
The Powder River Quarter Horse Breeders Invitational sale was held on 9/2/07 and they celebrated their 30th anniversary with one of the best offerings of horses they have had, record futurity entries, and a lively sale. The PRQHBA sale is one of the longest running association sales in the country and the futurity competition showed evidence of the top quality that these breeders are putting into their horses. Eighty nine head of top quality registered horses went under the gavel of Lynn Weishaar with the assistance of announcer John Johnson.
Fifty one weanlings averaged $941. The top three selling geldings averaged $4,900 with a running average on all riding horses (mares and geldings) of $2,841. Five broodmares averaged $810. Eleven yearlings averaged $1,273.
Homer Williams of Miles City, MT sold the high selling horse of the sale at $5,100. The eight year old brown gelding, Leos Joe Glo, sold to David Green of Park City, MT and was all you could want in a solid ranch horse. He had ranch experience and was gentle, gentle, gentle.

Other high selling horses included a blue roan mare from Capp Ranch, Inc. that sold for $5,000 to Joel Jackson of Terry, MT and Stubby, a seasoned grade gelding consigned by Zane Williams that sold to Lewis Krutzfeldt of Powderville, MT for $4,600.
Bar JT Quarter Horses sold a nice bay yearling gelding eligible for the Five State Futurity to Murray Rolph of Buffalo, SD for $3,000 and Nancy Hirsch sold a pretty, pretty palomino gelding for $3,000. He was sired by Totally Approved and won the PRQHBA futurity. This nice gelding went to Edwin Blanchard of Biddle, MT.

Always the highlight are the weanlings offered at this sale who are eligible to come back and compete for $10,000 in futurity prize money. The top selling weanling this year was from Bar JT Quarter Horses - a sorrel stud colt sired by their stallion Surefine Whiskey, a Paddys Irish Whiskey son out of a Doc O Dynamite mare. Taylor Rumph of Biddle, MT bought this nice colt for $1,700. Capp Ranch, Inc. sold an outstanding buckskin stud colt by NSL Yeller Feller to Ken and Peggy Kolka of Volborg, MT for $1,650 and Lavonne Westland's consignment of a CD Olena grandson sold to Zane Williams of Hammond, MT for $1,650 also.

The PRQHBA Futurity was filled with strong competition this year. Starting the weekend off was the Two/Three Year Old Futurity combining a halter class, rail class, and reining competition. Winning this competition was Teresa Williams on her three-year old gelding purchased from Church Steeple Quarter Horses of Miles City and sired by West Texas Holiday. She placed 2nd in halter and won the western pleasure and reining to secure her win. Teresa placed second last year on this horse and brought him back as a three year old to take home first place. Placing second was JT Korkow of Bar JT Quarter Horses riding Bro Dun Did It, a two year old buckskin sired by Bro Pete out of one of Korkow's mares. Curran Schaffer and Shannon Tarter split 3rd and 4th place and Dave Riesland took 5th on Poco Doc Dalux purchased from Bar JT Quarter Horses.

The next event on Saturday was the mature versatility competition. This event combines points from halter, western pleasure, reining, trail, cow work, heading, heeling, barrels, and poles. Winning the event and a trophy saddle was Tedi Jo Elgin on 17 year old Ace. Tedi Jo purchased Ace from Marian and Darrell Hanson through a PRQHBA sale when she was a 4-H'er. There were 15 total participants in this competition and the points were very tight.

Winning the yearling gelding futurity was Nancy Hirsch with Certified N Approved, a palomino yearling sired by Rick and Carmen Turnbough's stallion Totally Approved. Nancy took home a futurity check for $1,500 and sold the yearling in the sale for $3,000 - a nice return for a years work. The futurity paid out a total of $5,000 and returned money to six places. Second place went to Julie Korkow showing SH Class C Bar Cody (purchased from Spruce Hill Ranch) - $1,200, 3rd place Jackie Tarter showing Watch the Smokin Gun (purchased from TJ Wesley) - $900, 4th place Bram Schaffer showing A Classical Maudie (purchased from East Fork Quarter Horses) - $750, 5th place Bob Folsom showing JN Fine Lynx (purchased from Jim Nies) - $500, 6th place Theresa Williams showing Peppy Texas Kicker (purchased from Church Steeple Quarter Horses) $350.

Tammy McLure won the yearling futurity filly showing Iced In Rubies, a nice filly by Frosty Boy King who is also a Turnbough stallion. She also took home a check for $1,500 but kept her filly. This competition also paid out a total of $5,000 and returned money to six places. Second place went to Chris Bode showing Firewaters Bee (purchased from Marlene Bachand) - $1,200, 3rd place Shannon Tarter showing Spitfire Approved (purchased from Rick and Carmen Turnbough) - $900, 4th place Jake Lockwood showing Imacruisinfirebug (purchased from Marlene Bachand) - $750, 5th place Helen Shaw showing SH Casino Roan Rock (purchased from Spruce Hill Ranch) - $500, 6th place Alex Askin showing Kings French Charm (purchased from Rick and Carmen Turnbough) $350.

Also offered this year was a showmanship award. Alex Askin of Helena, MT won this award sponsored by Lynn and Connie Weishaar. She received a georgeous belt buckle.
